Pacific NW 928 Owners - Dyno III

On March 3, 2001, the Pacific North West 928 Owners got together to put our cars onto the dynamometer at Austin's Pro-Max in Tacoma, WA.

I drove my '90 GT from Spokane to Puyallup Friday night with my two girls (Corrine, 9 and Rachel, 8). We then spent the entire day at the Dyno taking movies and still pictures.

Thanks to Tom Middleton for arranging a great event and for going back to retrieve our results. Enjoy!

Thanks to Don Grish for adding his photos to be included here.

P.S. Be sure to check out the "Links" page and browse this CD to find directories containing the raw Dyno data (and viewing programs), JPG's of our runs, misc videos and pictures from past PacNW928 events.

As we got started I set up my video camera to capture all the runs. The camera was set up behind and to one side of the cars so it could pick up the best of the BWAAAAAHHHHH's.
Sounds Good
During the day most of the attendies got to know each other (and each other's cars). It's this camaraderie in our group that makes these events SO fun to attend.
Getting Loaded
Here's a view from inside Austin Pro-Max looking out. The garage door was left open all day so folks could wander in and out while the cars were moved in and out for our runs.

We used this wonderfull invention (from Louie Ott, I believe) to keep the cars cooled during their dyno runs.

During the day some additional work was done. Here someone is getting an RMB installed by Adam, I think.

Lloyd's run at max RPM. Too bad the '91's don't show the speed on these runs. The '90 has speedo pickups on rear wheels so I was able to see my speed on speedometer (120+ mph in fourth gear, 180+ mph in fifth gear last September).

Double Checking
As soon as Andrew started up we heard a metal on metal screeching sound. Andrew immediately let off and the Pro-Max staff started checking out the Dyno.
Where is It
The panels came off and one of the staff jumped in to check things out. Those rollers are a lot bigger than they appear!
Fixed
Dry bearings got greased back up and out popped the staff member. BTW, the staff at Pro-Max was great all day. Nice guys.
Wait for It
OK, Andrew, wait for the signal to *finally* start your run.
At Speed
There we go, wheels are spinning with NO screeching this time.

David Schmidt '90 GT
I was so busy doing my own run that I forgot to have someone snap a still picture of my car with me! Here's my '90 GT, Guards Red, from the 928 Owner's Challenge go car races in October, 2000.

My runs confirmed that my flappy had stopped working over the winter hibernation. A comparison graph of my two september runs with one of my Dyno III runs shows the effects of the unworking flappy. Note that in September I wasn't getting full throttle due to a blocked accelerator pedal. That's why my Dyno III readings were higher at top end, but remained lower through the mid-range.

Andrew brought his 8 month old daughter, Samantha and I got to hold her during Andrew's run. She appears to like the sound of her dad's car as she gave a loud "AAAAAAHHHHHH" as her dad's car started it's first run.

When in Doubt--
Well, that explains where those extra parts I had were supposed to go.
